Musical Director Wanted
We are looking for an inspiring and technically proficient Musical Director to lead us into the future (from September 2026). This is a freelance position, paid for time spent working directly with the orchestra in weekly rehearsals and concert days. You will be responsible for both our musical growth and public performances. You also may be required to attend committee meetings, usually 3 per year, but will have no voting rights.
Key Responsibilities
Conducting – Lead weekly rehearsals (Friday evenings) with 3 concerts per year, all in the North Somerset area.
Programming – Collaborate with the committee to select an engaging, challenging and balanced repertoire.
Development – Improve the orchestra’s technique, phrasing and overall “sound” in a relaxed, constructive environment.
Leadership – Foster a positive, inclusive atmosphere where players feel encouraged to do their best.
About us
West Mendip orchestra is a friendly community orchestra with around 30 regular members. We rehearse on a Friday evening (term time) 7:45 pm to 9:30 pm in Winscombe, North Somerset. We pride ourselves on performing a diverse range of repertoire from Brahms and Beethoven to film scores and contemporary commissions. Our goal is simple: to make music together and have fun!
The orchestra is managed by a voluntary committee and is a registered charity. Further information about the orchestra can be found at www.west-mendip-orchestra.org.uk.
About you
You may be an established conductor or a rising talent looking to increase your experience. Most importantly, you should have:
Excellent baton technique and understanding of orchestral scores.
The ability to motivate, communicate clearly and work effectively with non-professional musicians.
Strong connections within the local music scene (an advantage for sourcing guest soloists and particularly useful for encouraging young local talent).
A good sense of humour!
If this sounds interesting to you, please send your CV and a short covering letter to
contact@west-mendip-orchestra.org.uk
Closing date for applications is Friday 17th April 2026
The applicants will be interviewed and then reduced to a shortlist of three. These candidates will then be expected to conduct a short rehearsal with the orchestra on Friday 8th May 2026. The music will be given to the candidates before the rehearsal.
We look forward to hearing from you!
