Dennis Simons

Dennis has returned to the UK after nearly 20 years as a Music Director and Conductor in North America. He has been Music Director and conductor of the orchestras of Saskatoon (1993-97), Shreveport (1996-2002), Minot (2002 – 2012) and Interim Conductor of the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his permanent conducting positions, he guest conducted in the USA, Europe, Australia and Canada including the Toronto Symphony and the Victoria Symphony.

Previous to his North American adventure, he served for more than 20 years as a concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, working with master musicians such as Daniel Barenboim, Benjamin Britten, Carlo Maria Giulini, Sir Adrian Boult and Bernard Haitink. He was founder-leader and first violin of the Alberni String Quartet, one on the major string quartets in the United Kingdom. With these ensembles he can be heard on hundreds of recordings on the EMI, Chandos, Naxos and Decca labels, many long cherished by record collectors

Since returning to the UK, Dennis has formed the Shaplands String Quartet, coached at Trinity Laban, given master classes for the ISM and Wells Cathedral School where he has also been an adjudicator.

Dennis is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and has a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from the University of North Dakota.
